CARLOS M. POMARES of Bloomfield was elected to fill his first term as District 5 Freeholder in November 2017. Freeholder Pomares has served as a strong advocate for arts & culture and historic preservation. He previously served as Councilman At-Large in Bloomfield Township where he spearheaded the passage of an ordinance declaring the Morris Canal (1824-1924) and related sites as local landmarks. He also advocated for the creation of Canal Park, the ongoing restoration of the 19th century Collins House, and the development of the town-wide way finder signs. As the third of three children born to Cuban immigrants, Freeholder Pomares and his family were forced to leave Cuba in 1970. Upon arrival to the United States, his family settled in Union City, New Jersey. He graduated from Caldwell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and received awards for his public speaking and internship work in museums. He also holds a Master of Arts degree from Seton Hall University. Freeholder Pomares currently serves as the Executive Director of the Cuban Artists Fund and is a history and political science lecturer at Hudson County Community College. Freeholder Pomares is the founder of the Bloomfield Cruisers, a non-profit, vintage automobile organization that supports a variety of local charities, including the Bloomfield Police Department’s annual toy drive. He is married to Natasha Pomares, and together they have three children: Carlos, Felicita, and Mario.
