RUFUS I. JOHNSON of Newark was elected to his first term as a Freeholder At-Large in November of 2008 and re-elected in 2011, 2014, and 2017. He served as Chief of Staff for State Senator Ronald L. Rice from 1998 to 2014, having previously served as his Aide from 1982 to 1998 on the Newark Municipal Council. He also served as a Chief of Staff to the West Ward Councilman Joe McCallum from 2014 – 2018. Freeholder Johnson has a long history of community activism, especially involving young people. He was a co-founder and coach of both the Newark Optimist Club Little League and Newark Pop Warner Football League. Rufus also coached the Our Lady of Good Counsel High School Basketball Team for 10 years in the early 90’s. In 2009 he founded the Vision of Hope basketball camp for youth in Essex County with former NBA players and the help of the Essex County Executive. He held the position of President of the Newark West Ward Young Democrats from 1978-1983 and served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity for 9 years. Additionally, he founded and has advocated for the House Music Festival in Weequahic Park in Newark for the last 10 years. He also assisted in establishing the Essex County Caribbean Festival in 2015. Freeholder Johnson was educated in Newark Public Schools, and went on to attend both Essex County College and Wilberforce University in Ohio. Freeholder Johnson enjoys serving on the following committee’s: Chair of the Healthcare/Health Benefits Committee, Chair of the Public Safety/ Penal Committee, Alternate on the Essex County College Police Academy Advisory Board, Member of Housing & Community Development Oversight Community, Member of the Transportation Oversight Committee, Member of the Committee to Review Funding for Non-Profits, Member of Land Use Committee and Member of the Public Safety Sub-Committee (ICE). Freeholder Johnson will continue to passionately serve the youth and citizens of Essex County.
