Statement of Support for Governor Murphy’s Proclamation Declaring November 25, 2021 – ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DAY
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was established by the United Nations General Assembly as a response to the assassination of activists, the Mirabel Sisters. 2021 is the 30th anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence which takes place between the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25th) and Human Rights Day (December 10th).
New Jersey Governor Philip D. Murphy has proclaimed November 25, 2021, as ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DAY.
The Essex County Board of County Commissioners recognizes that violence against women is an obstacle to the achievement of equality, development, and peace, and prevents all who identify as women from obtaining their unalienable, integral, and indivisible human rights and freedoms. The Board also recognizes that certain groups of women are particularly vulnerable to violence and that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated all risk factors for violence against women and girls.
The United Nations’ UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls Campaign has chosen the theme of Elimination of Violence Against Women Day as “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!”. The Elimination of Violence Against Women Day has adopted the color orange to signify a brighter and gender-based violence-free future. The promotion of awareness in Essex County in solidarity with state, national, and global awareness, leads to worldwide galvanization with demonstrates solidarity in eliminating violence against women and girls.
The Essex County Board of County Commissioners joins the State of New Jersey and countless governmental and civil organizations in the United States and beyond in recognizing and supporting THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DAY.
